MIDSCO Mechanical was appointed to survey two existing steam-driven 4,000-litre hot water generating calorifiers at an NHS site in Nottingham. Originally installed in 1988, the units were nearing the end of their operational life, resulting in frequent breakdowns and increasingly costly repairs.
A detailed site survey confirmed that the steam coil systems were well beyond their intended lifespan, approaching 40 years of service. Given that the plant served a critical area within a busy hospital, any loss of hot water was simply not an option.
Following the survey, MIDSCO Mechanical designed a modern, energy-efficient solution that would eliminate the risk of failure while ensuring zero disruption to hospital services.
The first calorifier was safely decommissioned, creating space for the installation of two 200kW plate heat exchangers, supplied by our trusted partners at Virdis Energy. The new system was installed and commissioned swiftly, with no downtime to hospital operations.
Once the new system was live, a seamless changeover was completed and the remaining calorifier removed.
The client was delighted with the outcome, benefiting not only from improved reliability but also from long-term energy savings, thanks to the removal of large-volume hot water storage.
Key Outcomes:
- Removal of life-expired steam calorifiers
- Installation of modern, high-efficiency plate heat exchangers
- Zero disruption to hospital hot water supply
- Improved system reliability and reduced maintenance costs
- Long-term energy efficiency gains
